What Are The Odds?
Playing the lottery is something that many people take part in often. In fact, the lottery has become one of the most mainstream ways to gamble in the United States. Gambling and trying to beat the odds is a thrill and a rush. In fact many people find this form of gambling to be such a thrill and rush that they become addicted to it. With that being said, it makes sense that over 80% of the revenue that is made by the lottery is from habitual lottery players.
Since the lottery and the gambling can trigger addiction, why do we still implement it? The lottery produces a lot of revenue that assists in building and repairing roads, helping schools, and quite a few other things at a state level. There are even gambling hotline numbers printed on lottery cards so that those who might feel addicted can call and seek help.
We talked to a current lottery player and an admitted addict to see what the addiction to gambling in the lottery is really like. He said the following: ”It’s like a constant itch that you can’t quite get to. I have won small amounts of money on many occasions, but I feel like I will keep on playing until I hit the big jackpot. All kinds of things will trigger my desire to play the lottery, like an aromatic smell can trigger it or just seeing something that reminds me. I’m not sure if I will ever stop playing the lottery.”
